Actuators
Actuators convert electrical signals into mechanical motion or other physical quantities.
Algorithm
Specification on how to solve a task.
Automation Bias
When a human decision maker prefers recommendations from an automated decision-making system to information without automation (even if that information is correct).
Autonomous driving
Using a driverless transport system with autonomous behaviour.
Bias
Bias is a prejudice for or against something or someone that can lead to unfair decisions. It is well known that people are biased in their decision making. Since AI systems are designed by humans bias can arise in many ways in AI systems.
Chatbot
A chatbot is an AI system that can communicate with its user in a natural language.
Collaborative Robot
Industrial robot that works together with people, i.e. in the same workspace.
Deep Learning
There are different types of neural networks and machine learning approaches – one is deep learning. This approach refers to the fact that neural networks have multiple layers between input and output that allow the whole input-output relation to be learned in sequential steps.
Drone
Unmanned aircraft operated autonomously or controlled from the ground.
Exoskeleton
External support structure for an organism that can also be used to increase performance with the support of technology.
Humanoid Robot
Robots with human-like shape or characteristics.
Machine Learning
Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence. The goal of machine learning is to develop algorithms which can learn and improve over time and can for example be used for predictions.
Neural Networks
Some machine learning approaches use algorithms based on the concept of neural networks. Inspired by the human brain, an artificial network of small processing units (comparable to neurons in the brain) with many weighted connections is formed.
Pattern Recognition
Pattern recognition is the ability to recognize regularities, repetitions, similarities or laws in data sets.
Sandbox
An isolated area where actions have no effect on the external environment.
Science Fiction
A narrative that depicts scientific and technical speculations on a distant future.
Software Agents
A computer program that is capable of certain (specialised) independent and self-dynamic (autonomous) behaviour.
Strategising
Includes all practical measures taken by individuals to develop long-term goals, plans and actions.
Testbed
Scientific platform for experiments and research.
Trustworthy AI
According to the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence Trustworthy AI has three components: (1) it should be lawful, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations (2) it should be ethical, demonstrating respect for, and ensure adherence to, ethical principles and values and (3) it should be robust, both from a technical and social perspective, since, even with good intentions, AI systems can cause unintentional harm. Trustworthy AI concerns not only the trustworthiness of the AI system itself but also comprises the trustworthiness of all processes and actors that are part of the system’s life cycle.
